Main Pitch
|
After extensive research on conventions of the RnB genre we have gained vital knowledge that will help us on our way to make a successful music video. We talk you through the basic ideas we had on artist names, costume, props and the overall theme for our music video.
We were contemplating which song out of the two choices we picked would best suite the RnB genre and would grab the viewers attention, it was between 'Ghostpoet - Us against Whatever' and 'Chris Brown feat Jhene Aiko - Drunk Texting' We found that with Ghostpoet, he is mainly an underground indie artist with a small proportion of listeners. We believed that we could use this to our advantage as we could become more creative with this style of music and could lead us down a more indie/hip music video. However, even though Drunk Texting is a commercial song that has been listened to by millions of people, the beat and the lyrics allowed us to create an image of what we believed would suite the younger population between the ages of 15-21 as it correlates with most of the younger generation situations. Neither of the songs had a music video so again we used this as an advantage as it allowed us to be original and work with different ideas that would otherwise have looked as though we had copied the idea if they did have a music video. So in order to have a concrete decision, we decided to send out a survey that asked the listeners "From what you know of the RnB genre today, what song do you feel will be best received by an audience of this genre?" We received 65 responses, with 23.08% (15) voting Ghostpoet and 78.46% (51) voting Chris Brown featuring Jhene Aiko, and so we made our final decision. |
Contacting the artist
After deciding on the song we were going to use, we needed to gain permission from the artists if we were liable to use their song for our coursework due to copyright grounds. We approached the artists on Twitter, we chose the social media route as it is a way in which the artists can personally interact with fans from all over the world.

Initial Idea
VIDEO mood board
This collage of photos give a rough idea of what we plan to include in our music video from props to costume and narrative. The props we are going to use are notorious in creating the ' party life ' image amongst the younger generation for example the red cups. A mobile phone will also be used throughout the music video as a handheld prop in order to assist the narrative of texting. The narrative however, slightly contradicts the mainstream RnB narratives which mainly consist of love stories and heartbreak. We took a slightly different approach, making it a bitter break up with jealousy and spite as soon as alcohol becomes involved. All of the above, again, corresponds with man lives of the younger generation as they have all done something they deeply regret when they are not in the correct state of mind.

casting
Chian Henry as 'The Night Before'/ TNB
Taking into account the research that we have conducted into the RnB genre, we believe that Chian is a decent male who is able to perform the role a RnB artist. We found that this genre consists of mainly black artists, there are some anomalies in this case for example Justin Timberlake, however we decided to conform with the generic conventions. Chris brown is a confident artist who has inspired many of his fans to dress like him, and become 'him' in a way. We needed the right person that is able to fit in with the confidence and swagger that RnB artists have and thus concluded that Chian is to be the main male character due to the similarities in personality. Mya Yilla as 'Mya' We believe that Mya is a suitable female that can portray Jhene Aiko is a very truthful way. Jhene Aiko is in many aspects a respectable woman, she does not allow the recent sexualising of women in music videos to be apparent in her videos. Jhene comes across to her mass audience as shy but on camera doing what she does best she is a very confident artist. Mya fits this role well as she is quite shy, but when she knows she has to become a character, she flourishes into a confident young lady who is able to perform in the same way Jhene is. With both our actors having personalities that fit typical gender roles, audiences may be able to make great sense of our music video for its narrative and genre. |

prop list
SPEAKERS -
This will to create an enhanced idea of a music-filled event, and could help to mentally amplify the song. Music can been considered as a source to forget your worries, meaning the speakers can emphasise Chian's initial apathetic attitude.
RED CUPS -
This a recognisable feature of the modern party scene and they represent the culture of the young generation. Along with the idea of a party, this is something they are accustomed to.
CONFETTI -
Again the video consists of party scenes and to emphasise this to do audience we have to include features of a party and confetti is a typical feature. Scenery is just one of the aspects audiences of music videos identified in our market research.
PHONES -
Phones will be a consistent feature to transmit the narrative to audiences. We plan for the pair to be texting throughout the video. Phones are another feature of young people's life so this prop will help them to make sense of the narrative as the are familiar with it.
ALCOHOL BOTTLES -
Another prop which will help play out the narrative and a feature within the young party lifestyle. It also helps to highlight the state of mind the characters are in when they are behaving in the way they are.

costume
MYA - WHITE DRESS, HEELS, LONGLINE COAT, RED LIPSTICK
We wanted Mya to look sexy yet sophisticated so we decided to give her a look that isn't too revealing, however is does outline her bust and shows a bit of cleavage. We wanted to create an atmosphere where she is trying to prove to TNB that just because they broke up doesn't meant that, as a girl, she is unable to go out like he does.
CHIAN (TNB) - JEANS, CARDIGAN, PUFFY COAT, CAP
TNB is rocking a more casual look, we wanted to show that he is not going out to impress other girls, but more so going out to try and get over the break up and drink his sorrows away. As a typical boy, TNB shys away from showing emotion and instead sports a facade that makes him appear careless to the situation. We feel this costume will imply to audiences TNB's laid back, don't-care attitude which will ultimately be knocked down by the alcohol.
